The BCS Awards

The British Cartographic Society presents awards annually within various cartographic fields.

PROFESSIONAL AWARDS
These BCS Awards give acclaim and recognition to outstanding work in the field of cartography. They represent some of the most prestigious honours that can bestowed on those who contribute to the cartographic profession.

The British Cartographic Society Design Award
Awarded annually for the most outstanding map produced by a member of the Society and presented for consideration. Entries may be submitted by individual or corporate members of the Society.

John Bartholomew Award
HarperCollins have generously provided the British Cartographic Society with an award for excellence in the field of small scale thematic cartography. Entries may be submitted by an individual or organisation involved in small scale thematic cartography.

The Ordnance Survey Award
Through the generosity of the Ordnance Survey the BCS are able to present an award of £250 and an Ordnance Survey Gift, for innovation in design and presentation of spatial information with an emphasis on creativity in any form of cartography.

The Henry Johns Award
Through the generosity of Lovell Johns, the British Cartographic Society is able to present a cheque to the authors of the most outstanding article published in The Cartographic Journal during the calendar year. The panel of judges consists of the past-President of the BCS and Editor of The Cartographic Journal .

 

STUDENT AWARDS
In parallel with the professional awards the BCS recognises the efforts made by students to gain qualification on the field of cartography. These awards hope to encourage and reward students who excel on their courses.

Reader's Digest Award
Through the generosity of Reader's Digest the British Cartographic Society is able to offer two awards of £200, plus the Reader's Digest New Illustrated Atlas of the World, for meritous work by students of cartography.

National Geographic Society Award
Through the generosity of the National Geographic Society, the British Cartographic Society (BCS) is able to offer a scholarship. the purpose of which is to give recognition to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in cartography and to encourage the completion of a first degree course or the pursuit of a postgraduate course.
